In her Sensory Garden presentation Sarah Shapiro will cover the definitions and benefits of Horticultural therapy and therapeutic horticulture. She will share her journey to becoming a Registered Horticultural Therapist. Discover what populations Horticultural Therapists work with and where they work. Learn about successful horticultural therapy programs, sensory activities, and sensory gardens. Sarah Shapiro is one of the founding members of Root in Nature, a female led social enterprise that uses nature and plants to increase community well-being.

Sarah Shapiro is a Registered Horticultural Therapist who works full time as a Horticultural Therapist at Perley Health, a long-term care home in Ottawa. In 2021, she helped start a social enterprise called Root in Nature where she is the lead Horticultural Therapist. She is a member of and volunteers with The Ottawa Horticultural Society, The Ottawa Herb Society, the Friends of the Experimental Farm, Sending Reiki to trees group, and on the Registration Committee with the Canadian Horticultural Therapy Association. Sarah incorporates many complementary therapies into her professional and personal life including: yoga, meditation, sound and crystal healing, aromatherapy, and natural health products. What she most loves about her profession is exploring creative ways to connect people with plants, gardening, and nature by meeting individuals where they are at and using person-centered individualized programming.
