The Self-Sufficiency Garden:

Feed your family and save money” by Huw Richards and Sam Cooper. Penquin Random House. 2024. by Josephine Norton

What this book lacks in pizzazz it certainly makes up for in comprehensiveness. There are not any  glossy colour photographs but instead lots of grids, timetables, layouts, and plans. The book opens with a chapter defining and illustrating the principles of self-sufficiency.  Author Huw Richards  explains how to create the elements of the garden, raised beds, poly tunnel, composting etc., then outlines the growing year through the harvests of the months. When creating a time table for yourself, allow for the fact this gardener is working with an English garden although this book is published in North America. Huw’s co-author, Sam Cooper, is a chef and in the his section, titled “In the kitchen” tells the reader how to use the crops to make salads, soups, curries and drinks etc. You may have already be acquainted with these people through their major  presence on YouTube or by having found their earlier books “Veg in one bed”, “Grow food for free” and “The vegetable growers handbook.
