Class Details
Class 1: MHS Volunteers in Action – Celebrating 95 years! Capture a photo of MHS volunteer(s) in action at a MHS event or in one of the MHS gardens.
Please provide the MHS volunteer’s name(s) and the name of the MHS event or garden.
Class 2: The Colour Teal – A photo of a garden, balcony, porch, or patio that includes the colour teal which can be found in flowers, or garden containers, or garden furniture and/or garden art.
Class 3: Aquatic Plants – The whole flower/plant is to fill most or all of the photo frame. No partial images of the plant will be accepted.
Class 4: Contemplation – Your interpretation that includes a variety of plants and shrubs.
Class 5: Two Peas in a Pod – Show us your best pea photo or other vegetable from your garden.
Class 6: Bird Architecture – Your interpretation. Close-up or macro photo (without disturbing the bird’s habitat).
Class 7: Year of the Snake – This is a flora and fauna photo specifically of any snake, reptile, toad or frog found in your garden or one you came across on a nature walk. No other animal photos will be accepted. Photo must include 40% floral/horticultural component.
General Rules
– The competition is open to Members (i.e., in good standing) of the Manotick Horticultural Society (MHS).
– Unless you indicate otherwise at the time of submission, by entering the MHS photo contest you are giving implicit consent to MHS that your name and the images of your photos may be reproduced by the MHS in 1) MHS publications, 2) promotional material, 3) MHS website and 4) other social media such as MHS FaceBook. You will be credited for your images and will retain ownership of them.
– Deadline for entries: on or before November 1, 2025. Entries submitted after this date cannot be accepted.
– Non-compliance with the contest general rules or rules for entries can result in disqualification of an entry.
– Photos not meeting the class description will be screened out – please read the description carefully.
– Two entries per competitor per class.
– A photo may be entered only once, i.e., into one Class only.
– Photos entered in a previous MHS Photography Contest will not be accepted.
– Photos must have been taken within the last four (4) years. To verify right click on photo, go to properties, click on Details. Look for the date the photo was taken.
Judging
- Judge’s Choice – Photos will be evaluated by a Judge external to MHS for first, second, and third place for the best images in each class. The images will be judged on their horticultural merit, photographic impact and subject interest.
- Member’s Choice – MHS members will vote online to determine ‘the best’ in each Member voting runs thru the month of January 2026.
- Overall Judged Winner – The winner will be determined by the total combined points for classes allotted to first, second and third place plus member’s choice votes.
Photo Criteria
– Photos submitted to the contest must be taken by you as the artist.
– Photos must contain 40% floral/horticultural content (plants, fruits, vegetables, flowers, trees, etc.).
– Photos will be accepted in digital format only.
– Photos may be adjusted for light, colour balance or cropped but must not be enhanced by adding photo elements or other modifications.
– Ensure photo image is at the highest resolution possible: more than 2MB.
– Do not submit low quality images as they will be disqualified.
– Make sure photos do not have your name or date printed on them.
– Naming of photos: Please name each of your digital photo files as follows: Class number; Your name; and Subject name. Example: Class 1_Jane Fleur_Inspiration. It is not the Convener’s
responsibility to rename your images.
– E-mailing of photos: E-mail one photo at a time to mhsphotocontests@gmail.com with the Class Number in the subject line.
By submitting photos to any MHS site you are granting MHS permission to: 1) publish the photos with your first and last name; 2) re-use the photos to promote events, and when possible, include your name.
